Project summary:
The need:
The humanitarian situation in Burkina Faso is dire. For decades, the Burkinabe people have been gripped by political instability, internal conflict, food shortages and extreme weather events like chronic droughts, flash floods and windstorms. Widespread violence over recent years has caused massive population displacements with 1.5 million people internally displaced, including over 900,000 children.
In 2022, 4.7 million people require humanitarian assistance; 2.6 million of these are children.
Growing insecurity means most of the population, already affected by extreme poverty, is unable to access basic services such as clean water, health and education.
Currently, 1.1 million children lack access to education.
The main barriers to education for Burkinabe children include:
- Ongoing conflict and insecurity
- Poverty
- High population growth
What we’re doing:
- We work with vulnerable communities to make sure as many children as possible can go to school. Most of these children are orphans or come from disadvantaged backgrounds.
- We sponsor and train qualified teachers to ensure children receive quality education
- We encourage strong parental and community participation to overcome barriers to learning
- We create a safe and healthy learning environment through the development of schools and community centres.
What we’ve (you + us) achieved in 2021:
- Built three community centres to meet the needs of the local community, with dedicated space for community programs, worship and education.
- Built one school to provide an entire community of children with access to free, quality education
- Built four classrooms and equipped them with all the resources children need to learn and play, like desks and chairs, books and stationery
Trained and sponsored 17 teachers so they can keep delivering quality education and we can keep vulnerable children in school
