Afghanistan Emergency
In the early morning of 22 June, the south-east of Afghanistan was struck by a devastating 6.1 magnitude earthquake. More than 1,000 people were killed and another 1,500 injured as the country battles ongoing crisis.
The death toll continues to rise. Approximately 2,000 homes have been destroyed and thousands of families are now desperately searching for shelter and protection.
For almost four decades the people of Afghanistan have endured crisis after crisis. An ongoing war, natural disasters, chronic poverty, and food insecurity have caused widespread suffering. In 2021, the World Food Programme (WFP) described Afghanistan as being on the brink of a ‘humanitarian catastrophe’ with 22.8 million people – or more than half the population – facing acute food insecurity. Life in Afghanistan is precarious for many, particularly for women and children who face an uncertain future.
