Afghanistan Emergency

For almost four decades the people of Afghanistan have endured crisis after crisis. An ongoing war, natural disasters, chronic poverty, and food insecurity have caused widespread suffering. In 2021, the Afghan people were dealt another blow with increasing political instability. Now, Afghanistan is on the brink of a humanitarian catastrophe with over 570,482 internally displaced people, 14 million people food insecure and 2 million children malnourished (as of 2021).  Life in Afghanistan is precarious for many, particularly for women and children who face an uncertain future.

Access to life’s essentials – food, water, education, and healthcare – is extremely difficult.

Many displaced families are living in makeshift tents held together by sticks, surviving only on the little food they can find. Afghanistan is already on the brink of famine with almost half of the population facing life-threatening hunger. It is also estimated that half of all Afghan children under the age of five suffer from acute malnutrition.

With the dire situation currently, the World Food Programme (WFP) has described Afghanistan as being on the brink of a ‘humanitarian catastrophe’.
